The incident occurred around 20:00 when the family was trying to connect a newly purchased gas heater due to load-shedding. The heater malfunctioned, leading to an explosion that cracked walls and destroyed furniture. Emergency services responded quickly, arriving within six minutes. The mother, Phindile Memela, recounted how neighbors helped extinguish the flames. EMS media liaison officer Xolile Khumalo advised the public to ensure gas cylinders are free of damage, properly tightened, and stored in ventilated areas away from heat and flammable substances.
