Gunman Identified in Trump Rally Shooting Incident
>
In a dramatic and tragic incident, a gunman identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night. Crooks, who was from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was killed by a Secret Service sniper. The shooting also claimed the life of Pennsylvania firefighter Corey Comperatore and left two other men critically injured.
The FBI identified Crooks through DNA analysis as he was not carrying any identification. Crooks, a 2022 graduate of Bethel Park High School and a recent graduate of the Community College of Allegheny County with an Associate in Science degree, worked as a dietary aide at a local nursing and rehabilitation center and was a member of a gun club.
While the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, authorities have found no links to foreign terrorism or military connections. Crooks’ political affiliations were unclear, though records show he was a registered Republican who had once donated to a Democratic group. His family is cooperating with the investigation, and the FBI has received over 2,000 tips from the public.
Crooks was armed with a legally purchased semiautomatic AR-style rifle, and police found suspicious devices in his vehicle. Witnesses reported seeing Crooks on a rooftop before the shooting, and despite their attempts to alert officers, the gunman managed to fire several rounds.
Former President Trump sustained a minor injury to his ear and was quickly evacuated under Secret Service protection. Enhanced security measures were in place at the rally, including counter-sniper teams and protective barriers for the former president.
President Biden condemned the violence and called for a reduction in heated political rhetoric. The investigation into Crooks’ motives and background continues.
