Upholding the Law in Osun’s Election

Learn from Rivers State: IGP, AGF, and Security Agencies—Respect the Law and Uphold Democracy in Osun’s Election

By John Egbeazien Oshodi

As Nigeria prepares for the upcoming elections, it is imperative for security agencies, particularly the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), to uphold the rule of law and ensure a transparent electoral process. The recent events in Rivers State serve as a poignant reminder of the critical need for integrity and impartiality in our democratic practices.

The incidents in Rivers highlight the potential for electoral violence and the manipulation of state security forces for political gain. Such actions not only undermine public trust in the electoral process but also threaten the very essence of democracy. It is crucial for all stakeholders, including the IGP and AGF, to learn from these occurrences and commit to enforcing laws that protect citizens and ensure free and fair elections.

A key component of achieving this is the strict adherence to established legal frameworks governing elections. Security agencies must act as neutral arbiters, providing an environment where voters can express their will without fear of intimidation or violence. To achieve this, the IGP must ensure that police forces are adequately trained and prepared to handle any electoral disputes with professionalism and respect for human rights.

Moreover, the AGF plays a pivotal role in reinforcing the sanctity of election laws. This office must take proactive steps to prosecute any individuals or groups that attempt to disrupt the electoral process. By doing so, the AGF will send a strong message that electoral malfeasance will not be tolerated.

In addition to enforcing laws, it is essential to engage civil society and educate citizens about their rights during the electoral process. Voter education initiatives can empower citizens to report any irregularities they encounter, thereby fostering a culture of accountability and transparency.

As we look ahead to the elections in Osun, it is crucial for the IGP, AGF, and all security agencies to adopt a stance of vigilance and respect for democracy. Learning from the challenges faced in Rivers will enable these institutions to better serve the public and protect the integrity of our electoral system.

In conclusion, the upcoming elections present an opportunity for Nigeria to reinforce its commitment to democratic values. By prioritizing the rule of law and ensuring that security agencies operate without bias, we can create a safer and more just environment for all citizens to exercise their democratic rights.
